Chester's working self-concept is variable when he finds himself around different people. When he is with his conservative family, he describes himself as liberal, but when he is with his friends from Connecticut, he describes himself as Southern.
The self-concept is also known as self-identity, it is the perception that the individual has about themselves. Self-concept consists of individual's self-schemas and also relates with self-knowledge and self-esteem.

Further Explanation

Although self-concept is very different from self-esteem and self-knowledge, it is the perception that an individual has towards their behavior, abilities and some special characteristics.
For example, some thought, such as I am a good father, I am a bright fellow are examples or part of self-concept.
Self-concept is very common in young people and also among people that are going through the process of identity formation.
Many theorists have proposed various ways of thinking about self-identity. For example, a social identity theory states that self-concept is made of two key components.
The two components are:
- Personal identity
- Social identity
Personal identity has to do with traits and other qualities that make individuals special while social identity is how individual identity with religion or community.
In 1992, Dr. Bruce also suggested some six special domains that are linked with self-concept and these include
- Family
- Academic
- Physical
- Competence
- Social
- Affect
