Exposition
If this is the story I think it is, the children are told they are going to the beach in the exposition. However, the way they are dressed and how they prepare for the beach is not the way a typical family would dress for swimming and playing in the sand. It begins to set up the conflict and struggles of the family. The exposition is the beginning of the story where the setting, main characters, and main conflict is introduced. The climax is the point of no return, where the main character often has to make a difficult decision. No matter what the protagonist chooses, he or she will never be the same again. The falling action are the results of the decision and loose ends being tied up. The resolution is the end of the story. The main conflict is resolved and the protagonist often understands how he or she has changed from the events of the story.
It would be the word late.
