Abe Lincoln's election as president resulted in South Carolina leaving the Union. This took place roughly one month after the election. South Carolina was worried that as president, Lincoln would work with Northern congressmen to end the institution of slavery. This would negatively impact the Southern economy, as slaves were the primary labor force. This is why South Carolina left the Union and encouraged other states to join. Ultimately, 11 states would secede from the Union throughout the Civil War.
