Answer:

Aside from the horrors committed during the Holocaust in its systematic killing of jews and other Nazi prisoners of war, one of the most salient crimes against humanity was that of dehumanization. The war experiments committed by the Nazis, and the killing of people whom they did not see as "suitable" to be alive, are clear indications of two things: a) the horrific capacity of the human brain to compartmentalize even inhuman acts (that would be the Nazis) and, b) the fact that there are people who are physically able to commit these crimes "as told."

Answer: "The Lottery" is a short story written by Shirley Jackson, first published in the June 26, 1948 issue of The New Yorker. It has been defined as "one of the most famous short stories in the history of American literature".

The story is about a fictional small town in contemporary America which makes an annual rite known as "the lottery". The objective of the lottery is to pick a human as a sacrificial victim to be stoned to death to ensure the community's continued well being.

Readers' initial refusing response surprised both Jackson and The New Yorker: subscriptions were cancelled and much hate mail received throughout the summer of its first publication. The Union of South Africa banned the story.

The story has been dramatized many times and made the subject of sociological and literary analysis

What is 66 2/3 of 30
iris [78.8K]
Well you could solve by cross multiplying 66 and 2/3 (into an improper fraction) multiplied by the reciprocal of 30, but 66 and 2/3 means 2/3 (1/3 equals 33 1/3 %) so then you can divide 30 by 3, which is 10, and then multiply by 2 to get 20. So, 66 and 2/3 of 30 is 20. Hope that helped!

What do these lines from Antigone show about Creon's character?
Alekssandra [29.7K]

The answer is: 3 He has a patriarchal point of view.

In the excerpt from "Antigone," by Sophocles, Creon expresses that the social system must be controlled and preserved by men. He also underestimates the authority of women and does not think women should rule. As a consequence, he suggests that society must be dominated by the power exercised by the masculine genre.

No matter what people say, every act of kindness is in fact purely selfish. Even large gifts to charity feel good to the giver.
DerKrebs [107]

Answer:

D). 'On the contrary'

Explanation:

As per the question, option D displays the phrase i.e. 'on the contrary' from the given passage that indicates an opposing or contrary thought as this phrase signals the beginning of the ideas in the passage that would contradict the previous ideas presented. This phrase introduces the alternative idea that challenges the prior idea which states that 'every act of kindness is in fact purely selfish' by offering the contradictory claim that 'selfishly motivated giving has done a lot of good in the world'. Thus, the phrase 'on the contrary' signifies contrast and hence, option D is the correct answer.
