With the collapse of the Second Party System comprised of rivals Democratic Party and Whig Party, differences and animosity increased between abolitionists in the North and pro-slavery in the South. The so-called party's crisis of 1850 opened the door to what was imminent, a military conflict between the Union and the seceded states that formed the Confederation.
