Jefferson directed Meriwether Lewis to gather as much information as he could concerning the possibility of trade with merchants there, and during the winter of 1803-04 Lewis considered conducting a personal reconnaissance of the Indian route to Spanish country that led up the Kansas River.

They attack foreigners and burned down missionaries. With the support of the Empress Dowager, they
stormed the foreign legations for 55 days.
The foreigners did their best to defend themselves against the
boxers. An international army composed
of British, American, Russian, Japanese, French, German, Italian and other
foreign forces liberated the legation and drove the boxers out. The boxers were later executed for their
acts.
