The goals of the fireside chats used during World War 2 and the Great Depression by President Franklin D. Roosevelt were to inform the public people about what was going on in the government. Roosevelt also used these fireside chats to calm down the citizens, and to tell them that everything was going to be all right. Fortunately, yes, the goals of the fireside were accomplished. 

FDR, or Franklin D. Roosevelt, used very persuasive yet simple language, so that everyone would understand what was going on and wouldn't panic, because a farmer who wasn't as educated as the common man is still a citizen.
