New England--lumber and trade--geographically the area has many forests allowing for a lumber industry. There are also many port cities responsible for trade.

Middle--farming--the land in the Middle colonies was good for farming, especially Pennsylvania. The settlers of these colonies were families interested in food production farming.

Southern--cash crops--the land in the South was not as fertile for food but great for tobacco and cotton. The heat and swampy conditions provided good land for cash crops and plantation systems.
