Jonas Salk (1914-1995). For the first half of the 20th century, poliomyelitis, also known as infantile paralysis, was one of the

most dreaded diseases to attack young people. By 1955 American physician and researcher Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine that almost eradicated the disease in the United States and other developed countries.
Jonas Edward Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1934 and earned his doctorate in medicine from New York University's College of Medicine in 1939. While in medical school he had worked with Thomas Francis Jr. on killed-virus immunology studies. In 1942 he joined a group at the University of Michigan working on a vaccine against influenza. The vaccine was perfected in 1953.

In 1947 Salk became associate professor of bacteriology and head of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. There he began working on the polio vaccine. Three viruses caused polio, and a vaccine had to be effective against all of them. By 1952 Salk had developed such a vaccine and conducted field tests on children. His findings were published in 1953, and a mass field test was done the next year.

On April 12, 1955, the vaccine was released for use in the United States. In 1957 Salk was named professor of experimental medicine at Pittsburgh, and in 1963 he went to San Diego as head of the Institute (later named the Salk Institute) for Biological Studies. In 1977 Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died on June 23, 1995, in La Jolla, California.

Answer the following question based on the Compton's Encyclopedia reading:

Which choice best describes the reasons behind Jonas Salk's decision to search for a cure for poliomyelitis?

1. The disease affected children in the United States all of Salk's life.
2. The disease became an epidemic shortly after Salk became a doctor.
3. Jonas Salk's own child contracted poliomyelitis as an infant.
4. Jonas Salk suffered from poliomyelitis as a young child.

We don't have any proof that he or his own child got poliomyelitis as an infant. Also, this disease has been a serious issue before he became a doctor, so 2 is out also.

This only leaves one answer left. =)

 • C. The problems take them all evening to complete.

Subject verb agreement

This is one of the rules of grammar where the subject must agree with the subject in number, tense and many other things. Essentially, it means that they should have uniformity.

With this in mind, we can see that the sentence which has an error in subject verb agreement is option C because there is no agreement between the subject and verb as the subject is in past tense, while the verb is in present continuous tense.

You've probably seen news reports about the couple who fed their cat a vegetarian diet. Although I believe in individual rights,
AURORKA [14]

Answer:

I believe the best response to a counterclaim that raising animals to be used as cat food is cruel is:

C. By illustrating how animals in the wild are often carnivores.

Explanation:

The author is defending that human owners should not impose a vegan diet on their cats, since cats are naturally carnivores. That means their bodies truly need meat to function properly, and imposing a different diet causes health problems, which is basically cruelty.

People may present as a counterclaim the idea that raising animals to be used as cat food is cruel. That's a valid notion, but the author could easily respond to it by keeping to his explanation of what is and isn't natural. Before being domesticated, cats lived in the wild. Therefore, they hunted and killed other animals to feed themselves. Now that they have been domesticated, they depend on their owners to be fed. Since they are still carnivores - that hasn't changed - it is the owners obligation to provide them with what they need. Cats that have owners do not go out to hunt for their own food. They count on their owners to feed them. So, even if it sounds cruel, it is up to us humans to make the cat food that will serve its purpose properly by having meat in it.

Which sentence contains a misplaced modifier?
olasank [31]

The sentence that contains a misplaced modifier is the last option. Meowing frantically in the tree, I rescued the cat.

A modifier changes, clarifies, qualifies, or limits a particular word in a sentence in order to add emphasis, explanation, or detail. Modifiers are descriptive words, including adjectives and adverbs. Modifier phrases, such as adjective clauses and adverbial phrases describe adjectives and adverbs.
