The Songhai Empire was a state in the western Sahel that dominated the region in the 15th and 16th century. This was one of the largest states in African history, and it included important cities such as Gao, Timbuktu and Djenné. The state thrived due to trade, which was in turn aided by the existence of salt mines and gold fields.
