Santa Fe was chosen as the site of the new capital in 1851 by Pedro de Peralta. He was a Spanish colonial officer and Governor of New Mexico.

He founded Santa Fe and chose as the location for the Capital because he wanted an area which had a tight security and was easy to defend in the event of external forces.

The area also had good water resources which was important in its use for different functions. The area also had a vast amount of land for infrastructural developments.
