Answer:

are still loaded with meaning.

Explanation:

Hemingway's simple sentences are very meaningful. They clearly show the characters' opinions on a major theme of war. Passini tries to prove that war is the worst thing that can happen to people. The narrator does not agree because to him, defeat is worse as it means losing 'your home, your family'.

Although the characters express their ideas in short sentences, they convey their message in a powerful way and sound convincing to the reader because both Passini and the narrator make convincing arguments. Indeed, Hemingway's seemingly simple prose is loaded with meaning.

To a certain extent, parallelism helps to reinforce the message of these short sentences:

"They come after you. They take your home. They take your sisters." That's parallelism at its best.

Responding to this, Passini also uses repetition of words and structures: "Let everybody defend his home. Let them keep their sisters in the house.”

All these examples show how 'little' words can make a big difference.

irina1246 [14]

The complete question with the options was found online. It is as follows:

Which portion of this passage uses the sense of sound to create imagery? “Even the insistent cough of the woman next to him wasn’t enough to draw his eyes away from the tiny type of the ancient book.its pages were brittle and felt like they could crumble at the slightest disturbance. He noticed the musty odor of each page as he carefully turned it over”

A. Even the insistent cough of the woman next to him...

B. ...draw his eyes away from the tiny type of the ancient book.

C. It’s pages were brittle and felt like they could crumble at the slightest disturbance.

D. He noticed the musty odor of each page as he carefully turned it over.

Answer:

A. Even the insistent cough of the woman next to him...

Explanation:

Imagery is a literary device that uses language to appeal to the five senses (sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing). It helps make a description more vivid and impressive, allowing readers to feel involved in the situation as if they were the ones to be living it.

The passage we are analyzing here appeals to more than just one sense. However, the question is asking us to find the portion in which the sense of sound is used to create imagery. We can safely answer A. Even the insistent cough of the woman next to him... We, as readers, can imagine, hear the unstoppable, annoying cough. We have all been in situations where we wanted or needed to concentrate or pay attention to something, but someone's cough was utterly distracting and irritating. Still, the character in the passage is so involved in something else that even the insistent sound of the cough is not enough to distract him.
