The purpose of Curtis Wilkie's "Words Triumph Over Images" is to show that, rather than providing the most accurate information available, the media sometimes exagerates the situation, creating fear and chaos among the population.

Wilkie explains thatthe televised coverage of Katrina turned into a sort of "reality show". The reporters repeated information that was unfiltered, not always factual, and too often failed to provide any context

Because of this, he turned to the newspapers to get accurate and confirmed information.
