During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, the US became much more involved in world affairs. In other words, they were becoming a world power. This meant many things, many changes.

Populists demanded the government become the exclusive owner and operator of the railroads. Their major complaint concerned freight rates. Kansas Populists claimed the rail rates farmers and shippers had to pay remained excessively high. The railroads countered by saying anything less would be unprofitable.
