At first, Grendel was fascinated by the human world. When he mets humans for the first time, he realized he understood their language and that they were intelligent forms of life.

However, humans were afraid of Grendel and tred to attack him.

After that, Grendel observed the human kind for many years, and felt disgusted by their wasteful, brute violence.
