In the 19th century the Indochina peninsula was colonized by the French. After a period of Japanese occupation during World War II, the Vietnamese initiated the Indochina War against France, which ended with the defeat and expulsion of the French troops in 1954. However, the country was divided politically into two rival states, the Coomunist North and the Democratic South, which began a conflict of increasing intensity that ended in the Vietnam War, in which the North and the communist guerrillas known as Viet Cong faced the southern troops and the armed forces of the United States. The war ended in 1975 with the victory of the North and the following year the country was unified under a regime of communist orientation.
