At the beginning of the memoir, we see that Elie had retained his faithful belief in the overall goodness and love of God. This may be also be in part based off his Jewish upbringing. Thus, the whole experience left him questioning his faith and belief, but at times, he did not wholeheartedly let go of his believe in God. He did not cut his belief completely off but at the same time, he did not fully have that strong unquestioning faith he once had.
