Can someone please explain why slavery in Rome was not abolished?

Slavery helped Rome grow as a nation. And because they did not have advanced technology like we have today, abolishing slavery would cause Rome to loose a lot of the driving force behind their nation. There would be no one to tend to the crops and do other hard manual labor, and even if there were willing workers, they would have to be paid. Negatively impacting the roman elite.
