In 1783 Spain owned what is now the state of Florida.

It was a province of "Spanish Florida" from 1783 to 1821.

In fact, Florida was under the colonial rule of Spain, Great Britain and, France during the 18th and 19th centuries, until it became a territory of the United States in 1821.

Finally, in 1845 Florida was added as the 27th state of the United States.
