Answer:

I believe the best classification for the sentence is compound-complex.

Explanation:

A compound-complex sentence is comprised of two independent clauses and one dependent one. Let's remember that an independent clause is one capable of expressing a complete thought on its own. A dependent clause, on the other hand, does not express a complete thought. Instead, it depends on the main clause to make sense. When we join independent clauses, we use coordinating conjunctions. When we introduce a dependent clause, we use a subordinating conjunction. Let's take a look at our sentence:

Because they provide toys for children, fast food restaurants like McDonald's have become immensely popular among families, and the price of a Happy Meal makes them a great choice for parents as well as kids.

Notice that we have two independent clauses that can express a complete thought on their own:

1. fast food restaurants like McDonald's have become immensely popular among families

2. the price of a Happy Meal makes them a great choice for parents as well as kids

Those two clauses are joined by a comma and the coordinating conjunction "and":

-- fast food restaurants like McDonald's have become immensely popular among families, and the price of a Happy Meal makes them a great choice for parents as well as kids.

Prior to the first independent clause, we have a dependent one, introduced by the subordinating conjunction "because". Notice how it does not make complete sense on its own:

3. Because they provide toys for children

There is information missing. But, when we place together it with the main clauses, it makes sense:

Because they provide toys for children, fast food restaurants like McDonald's have become immensely popular among families, and the price of a Happy Meal makes them a great choice for parents as well as kids.

How does Shakespeare use literary devices in Juliet’s soliloquy to convey her feelings and frame of mind?
Svetlanka [38]

Shakespeare uses alliteration as Juliet describes her premonitions after she is left alone by her mother and her nurse. Alliteration occurs when a writer repeatedly uses the same letter at the beginning of words that are in close proximity. We see both a repetition of "f" and "c" sounds in the following speech: I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins that almost freezes up the heat of life. I’ll call them back again to comfort me. In the above passage, Shakespeare also uses the juxtaposition of opposites in placing "freezes" near "heat." Juliet conjures imagery as she imagines waking up in the vault and being driven mad by all the dead bodies there. Imagery is describing with any of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. In the following passage, Juliet vividly conjures smell and sound: what with loathsome smells, And shrieks like mandrakes torn out of the earthShakespeare uses repetition for emphasis, such as when Juliet repeats Romeo's name three times: Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! The exclamation point also shows her emotions rising to a crescendo. This soliloquy of Juliet's, in which, all alone on stage, she verbalizes her thoughts, is an example of foreshadowing or suggesting what is to come: things do go quite awry with the plan for her to feign death. Through Juliet's soliloquy, we learn her thoughts and fears as she takes the step of drinking the potion. We come to understand what a frightening prospect this is for her. We see what courage it takes her to go ahead with the plan. We also are alerted to the risky nature of this scheme.

Read the excerpt from "50 Below is Quite Cold, Even for Alaska."
kirza4 [7]

Answer:

It creates a sarcastic tone.

Explanation:

The definition of the word balmy is characterized by pleasantly warm weather. This word is used to describe the minus 20 degrees, which is horribly cold, but still not as cold as Alaska usually is. This combination of words creates a paradox - how can minus 20 degrees be balmy? It is not - the author is just being sarcastic. That's how the use of the word balmy creates a sarcastic tone.
