The correct answer is B) to be used for the transcontinental railway.

Gadsen purchased Southern desert land to be used for the transcontinental railway.

The Gadsen Purchase of 1854 was the agreement between Mexico and the United States, in which the U.S. accepted to pay Mexico $10 million for a portion of its territory that became part of what now is Arizona and New Mexico. This purchase made the United States to get the necessary portion of land for the Southern transcontinental railway. It also settled part of the conflicts resulted from the Mexican-American war that ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1948.
