How does the writer create atmosphere in this passage?Please I need it for 5 o'clock!

The author describes the atmosphere by talking about the dark cold night

The author describes the setting in the beginning with words such as "the night was cold and wet." 

Other vocabulary are used, "..with sudden and unlooked-for violence..". 

The way the author develops the characters create the atmosphere as well. Mr.White's wife is shown as being calm and optimistic whereas he is shown as being more pessimistic.
