“It was indeed a mistake to help such an ungrateful creature!” Just because you are nice to someone, does not mean that they will be nice to you.  Each of these characters thought that he was the one that was doing the "right" thing.  The Lion was greedy and he did not realize how compassionate the woodpecker was toward him.
