In the 14th and 15th centuries, merchants and traders would come to the city by land and sea and it was a center of the Islamic world. Cairo was connected to the Indian Ocean through the Nile, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. This was the most important trade route from Europe at the time. The Bubonic Plague was also said to have traveled along this same route as it crippled Cairo and Europe's major port cities.
