In the opening of the story, Miss Emily is referred to as "a fallen monument." As a metaphor, this fits her in several ways. She has died or "fallen." She has been a part of the town for so long that she is viewed as an enduring monument of sorts, rather than a human being.
The wheelbarrow was "glazed" with <em><u>rain</u></em>.
Each of the characters at the end of Act 1 feel disappointed because they know they won’t be able to manage living in the house and that’s why mama is giving Walter the money so they could buy their dream house and so that everybody else could be happy with their living style. The house represents happiness and so does mama’s plants but at the end of scene 1, the characters aren’t in the right mindset because they are slowly failing at managing.
