After a series of failed attempts to settle in the territory of North America, at the beginning of the 17th century, Samuel de Champlain directed the exploration of the mouth of the San Lorenzo river.

After the foundations of Tadoussac (1600) and Port Royal (1605), in 1608 de Champlain founded Quebec City.  This fact began the French colonization in America.

With the intention of exploiting the skins of the local fauna, the French colonists continued the exploration of the San Lorenzo river. They founded Trois-Rivieres in 1634 and Montreal in 1642.
