The effect of old colonial boundaries had a negative effect on independent African states. Since the boundaries were drawn by the European powers, many ethnic tribes which had not been in contact previously or were rivals were put in the same country and this caused great tension. Under European colonization, certain tribes were favored in comparison to others and this also caused great tensions when the colonial powers left.
