During World War II, the “Battle of the Atlantic” was considered as the longest battle. The battle was between the British and Germany in September 1939. The war came to end in May 1945 after surrender of Germany to the Allies. During six years of battle time, thousands of ships were sunk in the Atlantic Ocean and nearly ten thousands of men were killed.

Allied leaders planned to attack France. American troops and military supplies reached Europe. By 1945, Allied bombers reduced the war materials production in Germany.

Entry of Americans into the war made German completely unprepared to face the U-boat threat.
