Many black men had skills in cattle handling and they were typically former slaves or born into the families of former slaves. Nat Love (1854-1921) was an African-American cowboy, and a former slave, for example. His life has been an inspiration for many artistic forms, like literature : Joe R. Lansdale used Love in the novellas Nine Hide and Horns. In 2012 comics were published about his life. In films, his life is presented in "The Cherokee Kid" (1996) and in "They Die by Dawn" (2013).
