I believe that they both share the same theme. It conveys the the struggles and limitations of adverse surroundings. In the case of “the caged bird” it is a bird with its wings clipped and his feet tied placed in a cage as it struggles to be free. On the other hand “I know why the caged bird sings” is Mayas struggle in her life during the time of discrimination. Throughout her ordeals she keeps going and develops confidence and the capability to face any struggle.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is a memoir written in 1969 in which Angelou tells the story of his early years and all the injustices she had to go through for being a black girl in America.

On the other hand, “The Caged Bird” is a poem in which she uses the methaphores of free and caged birds to represent the free white Americans and the repressed black Americans.
