Hello there! The answer you are looking for is metaphor.

You find the words like and as in smilies, but not in metaphors. Metaphors refer something that isn't really happening, but compares it, to something else. For example: <em>A blanket of snow covered our yard.  </em>There wasn't really a blanket of snow, but the way the snow covered their yard was like a blanket covering a bed, or a person. An example for a simile would be something like: <em>The snow covered our yard like a blanket. </em>It's not directly saying the snow is a blanket, since it uses <em>like</em>.
