How does Lizabeth’s character develop in “Marigolds”?

In "Marigolds", Lizabeth's character moves from innocence and ignorance to knowledge and compassion.

When the story begins, Lizabeth was a young girl that hang out with the children of the neighborhood, who caused trouble and had childlike fun. She didn’t completely distinguish between right and wrong, and the children provoked Miss Lottie, but did not mean harm at all. When Lizabeth destroys Miss Lottie’s marigolds, she is no an innocent child anymore.  In that moment, she changes from a young irresponsible child to a woman that must face the consecuences of her destructive actions. After Lizabeth saw the old lady’s expression of sadness and anguish, she realized what an awful thing she had done, and felt empathy toward Miss Lottie. As the story develops, Lizabeth learns about herself and grows into a woman, feels compassion towards another person, and takes responsibility for her actions.
