Answer:

D. Both doubt a talking turtle actually exists.

Explanation:

The People Could Fly by Virginia Hamilton is a collection of 24 African America folktales. This particular story, The Talking Cooter is about a boy named Jim who is a slave but wants to be free. This story presents two types of character personalities: the dreamer which is Jim and the leader which is the talking turtle. Jim dreams about being free whereas the cooter acts on it and shows Jim how to do it.

Jim finds the talking cooter one day when he passes by a pond on the way to the slave-owner's house. When Jim meets the turtle, he begins to think that the turtle's plans might help him finally make hi dream come true.

The slave owner's disbelief is expressed in the words, "Oh, get out!" said the slaveowner. "You know that's not true."
