<span>Olivia refuses to marry Duke Orsino because D. her brother has died and she is in mourning. When the play starts, we find out that Olivia's brother died quite recently. We also find out that Olivia is wearing a black veil to honor his death, and that she will not take it off, or marry anyone for another seven years, while she is in mourning. </span>
