How does social networking make socialization today different from earlier periods of history?

Social net working allows more people to connect with each other more than they did back then. Even though social networking allows for people to connect some people overuse the networking to the point where they disconnect. Back in earlier periods of time people just wrote letters and they mostly spoke face to face.
