How did feudalism provide for the security of all the people of medieval Europe. Nobles and knights provided protection to both the highest person in society, the king, as well as the lowest people in society, the serfs. They provided protection to all in exchange for land and labor.

South Carolina alleged that the tariff was very harmful to the development of the economy of the southern states and declared it unconstitutional.

The federal government saw this as a pretext for fomenting disunion and wanting to put the issue of slavery under negotiation.
