His travels to the Western provinces of Da Yuehuzi and Gansu Provinces in his attempts to secure an alliance with the, against the Huns opened up several routes, which established the lucrative Silk route, connecting the East and the West.Although some of his diplomatic missions were unsuccessful, he managed to develop a thorough understanding of the customs, lifestyle and environmental conditions of almost thirty-six western provinces. This information proved useful to Emperor Wudi to expand his diplomatic and economic connections with these Western provinces. The constant supply of revenue from the lucrative silk trade on the silk route provided the financial basis for undertaking campaigns to defeat the Huns. However, it has to be understood that many other commodities such as spices, gold, expensive metals, muslin, camels, horses, myrrh, dates, and palms were also traded between the East and the West along the Silk Route.
