Read the following excerpt from Gary Soto’s story "Like Mexicans."

English

Answer:

She wants to preserve her family’s Mexican culture even though she no longer lives in Mexico.

Explanation:

The whole excerpt demonstrates how the grandmother wants to preserve her Mexican culture, and wants to pass it to her grand children since they are no longer in Mexico. First, she is stating that the best job he should found is to be a barber, because it is an easy one (inferring that other works in the states are long and hard). Second, she doesn’t want her grandson to date another “race” that is not Mexican (inferring that Mexican girls are the best ones and that if he dates other nationalities, he is going to have problems).

Explanation:

1- she doesn't seem all that eager to assimilate herself and/or family into American culture, "For her, everyone who wasn’t Mexican, black, or Asian were Okies."

2-key word "any", so this answer isn't accurate because she's not unwilling to "embrace ANY aspect of multiculturalism", (see 1).

3- no, she isn't concerned with "preserving Mexican culture" because she doesn't refer to Mexican, black, or Asian people this way, again (see 1).

4- and the monetary/career advice was the 1st ("bad advice") she gave him, I didn't see how that related at all to the 2nd ("good advice"). I saw both statements as 2 separate statements.

That's my take on all 4 possible answers. I'm apt to believe there should be a:

5- None of the above.

What rhetorical device is used in this excerpt from Mark Twain's "The Danger of Lying in Bed"?
34kurt
The answer would be anecdote. Allusion is a reference to another work. a rhetorical question is a question that requires and does not want and answer. an anecdote is a brief story designed to illustrate something. logic is how some one using reason to come to a sound/valid conclusion. An anecdote is not so strict on content. The content of the anecdote is logic reasoning. It could just as easily have been an anecdote for something like irony.
