Question 18:

Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" is allegorical (B) and surrealistic (D). An allegory is something that has deeper meaning than what is actually written. When Gregor turns into a bug, this is symbolizing how modern society separates humans from one another. Surrealism is when the story has dreamlike or absurd elements. Gregor turning into a bug isn't realistic.

Question 20:

There are two differences between a memoir and a biography. A memoir relies on the narrator’s memory, while a biography relies on various other sources (A). A memoir talks about a limited experience in a person’s life, while a biography deals with a larger part (D).

Question 30:

The purpose of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's speech was to inspire the students to never quit or accept defeat (C). This is clear when he states this: "this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense."

Question 39:

The pattern of meter used in this excerpt from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is alternating tetrameter and trimeter (E). Tetrameter is comprised of four metrical feet per line. A foot is a beat made up of stressed and unstressed syllables. While a trimeter has three metrical feet per line.

Why did Swift publish his ideas in satirical format?
kipiarov [429]

Answer:

He wanted his readers to see their own errors in logic and morality.

Jonathan Swift, arguably the greatest of all satirists, is very well-known for employing this form of literature that employs irony and humor, blended in a poignant social critique, to state a social issue of a problematic and unjust nature in order to signal its inhumane deficiencies and point towards a change of perspective that could foster social justice and care for those who are being wronged.

In at least 150 words, explain why Our Town is a modernist play. Discuss specific theatrical devices and themes that link the te
aliya0001 [1]
Our Town by Thornton Wilder is a modernist play because it explores the transience of human life, in a sense that the characters in the play highlight the significance of the little things that they do in their daily lives. The play is also narrated through the view of a stage manager which openly tells the audience about how the stage is designed and what each prop is meant for. The stage manager is a character both inside and outside the play which blurs the wall between the reality that what the audience is about to see is fictional, and the fiction that the play is supposedly real in the character's point of view. This characteristic of the play destabilizes the line between fact and fiction and is considered a modernist play based on that setting itself, among all other themes of the play.
