When translated to english: Every Friday they washed the car
you would use imperfect tense because you may know when they <u>start</u> washing the car, but not when they <u>finish</u>. The imperfect tense is used when we don't have a defined <u>beginning</u> or <u>end</u> of the action that happened in the past.
