Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. The only way to make a lot of sugar is to engineer a system in which an army of w

orkers swarms through the fields, cuts the cane, and hauls the pile to be crushed into a syrup that flows into the boiling room. There, laboring around the clock, workers cook and clean the bubbling liquid so that the sweetest syrup turns into the sweetest sugar. This is not farming the way men and women had done it for thousands of years in the Age of Honey. It is much more like a factory, where masses of people must do every step right, on time, together, or the whole system collapses. What claim do the authors make in this passage? Sugar farming is a modern version of honey farming. Sugar cane has to be boiled in order to make sugar. Sugar production requires a great deal of workers. This method of making sugar is thousands of years old.

Answer:

Sugar production requires a great deal of workers.

Explanation: In multiple passages in the paragraph, we can see that the author puts emphasis on the number of workers:

"The only way to make a lot of sugar is to engineer a system in which an army of workers swarms through the fields, cuts the cane, and hauls the pile to be crushed into a syrup that flows into the boiling room. There, laboring around the clock, workers cook and clean the bubbling liquid so that the sweetest syrup turns into the sweetest sugar. "

Thus, we can deduce that most likely answer is: Sugar production requires a great deal of workers.

(Hope this helps)

Which evidence from Passage 2 best supports the central idea that Arthur is destined to rule as king?
Stella [2.4K]

Answer:

Arthur is the son of Uther Pendragon.

Explanation:

  • The most famous version of the legend says that Arthur was the son of the famous King Uther Pendragon, whom the great sorcerer Merlin helped marry Arthur's mother.
  • When the boy was born, he belonged to Merlin, who kept his royal ancestry secret.
  • Years after that, Uther died and a civil war ensued in the kingdom as many nobles and knights wanted a vacant throne.
  • As a young man, Arthur drew a sword out of stone. Legend has it that the one who drew the sword was the son of Uther Pendragon, so Arthur became king.

Match each excerpt to the novel element its focuses on.
Liula [17]

Answer:

Setting:

  • It was a poky little shop, and the man was arranging furniture outside on the pavement very cunningly so that the more broken parts should show as little as possible.
  • The wide High Street, even at the busy morning hour almost as quiet as a dream-street, lay bathed in sunshine.
  • And, sure enough, over the top of the forest, where it ran down in a tongue among the meadows, and ended in a pair of goodly green elms, about a bowshot from the field where they were standing, a flight of birds was skimming to and fro, in evident disorder.

Character:

  • Two persons were within; the first he readily knew to be Dame Hatch; the second, a tall and beautiful and grave young lady, in a long, embroidered dress—could that be Joanna Sedley?
  • Jerry's name was Gerald and not Jeremiah, whatever you may think; and Jimmy's name was James, and Kathleen was never called by her name at all, but Cathy, or Catty, or Cat.

Explanation: I took the test.
