By the 4th century Britain's prosperity, which was the result of a mild climate and centuries of peaceful life, became bait for the greedy. Migration Anglo-Saxons gave Britain a new name-England. The power of Anglo-Saxon culture is evident to this day. Anglo-Saxons founded many kingdoms, the names of some still exist in the form of names of areas: Essex (Essex = East Saxons), Sussex (Sussex = South Saxons), Wessex (Wessex = West Saxons), Middlesex (Middlesex = Probably the Kingdom of Middle Saxons) , East Anglia = East Angles. By the middle of the seventh century the strongest were the three largest kingdoms-Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex.
