Answer:

definitely a double meaning

Explanation:

The author is saying that our waistlines have to suffer.  In saying, (s)he means to have the reader understand that the waistline will grow bigger the more we eat, and also giving off the sense of personification by saying that our 'waistlines' have to 'suffer'
