With the Treaty of Paris of 1898 some countries managed to gain new territories, while other countries lost some territories. The United States were one of the countries that benefited from this treaty. The United States got three new territories, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Philippines were the only ones for which the United States had to pay compensation, paying Spain 20 million USD for them. All three were of great strategic importance, and the United States actually managed to keep hold onto Guam and Puerto Rico over the years and still controls them, while the Philippines are now an independent nation.
