Rama is the central character in the Ramayana, a Hindu epic. He is the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu.
The varanas were an army of forest creatures (most often characterized as monkeys) that help Rama against the battle with Ravana, as told in the Ramayana. These monkeys also help Rama in his search for Sita, Rama's consort and the main female character of the epic.
