There are a lot of essential questions to ask, some examples include "Is this a symbol", "Where have I seen this before?", and "What does the setting have to do with the characters?". If you wish to know more about this kind of literary analysis I suggest reading Thomas C. Foster's "How to Read Literature Like a Professor".

The best description of the author's exigency on the passage is the  impact of government policies on undocumented  immigrant families.

Diane Guerrero talked about how government policy on immigration made her live all by herself at a young age of 14. She talked about how unsuccessful her parents were in trying to become citizens till they were deported.

In conclusion she was trying to tell her story and how the government policy on undocumented immigrants separates families and the impact it has on these people.
