It is home to the superhero Black Panther. Wakanda first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966), and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Here is a clip from the Black Panther movie explaining how wakanda is formed.

so first, there was a huge meteor, and then there was a whole bunch of Africans, and they were like, we gotta get this bread, so then 4 tribes kinda gathered around that meteorite, and they were like, "We are one with the ROCK!" which turned out to be vibranium, the strongest metal on earth, and now they got the coolest gadgets and stuff, and along with the meteorite, came this super cool flower, that gave a specific person, powers, like strength, speed, and stuff, and then that dude became a king, and they decided to hide from the world and stuff so no one takes their stuff....and stuff
