Jim is depicted as being extremely unintelligent through the principal third of the novel. The trap that Tom and Huck play on Jim is completely cliché just like Jim's attestation of his insight into the villain and of superstition.
Seen together, these portrayals of Jim appear to be very criticizing, negative, and lacking appreciation. The way that Jim is more than once tricked by straightforward traps with respect to Huck Finn adds to the feeling that Jim is really a trick.
