It has been documented that the first first-person shooter game was <em>Maze War</em> (1973-1974). <em>Maze War</em> was developed by Greg Thompson, Steve Colley and Howard Palmer. They were students in a NASA project whose goal was to develop a program for spacecraft designs.

The concepts that were used for this game were of great inspiration for many other video games developed later. These games became popular with the appearance of <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> and <em>Doom</em>.
