In Chinese hamster cell colonies it was found that the inactivation constant in the MTSH model is approximately 3.125 Gy-1 if 25

0 kVp X-ray is used. If Co-60 gammas are used to produce the same biological end point, the required dose is 160 cGy. It is further known that the biological effectiveness of neutrons at this endpoint is 4.0. What is the biological effectiveness of the Co irradiation with respect to the neutron irradiation

3 0

Answer: A. 20

Explanation:

Radiation dose = 160 cG, or

Radiation dose = 160 x 10-2 G

Radiation dose = 1.6 G

The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) on neutron irradiation is then calculated with the formula:

RBE of Co-60 = inactivation constant x dose x neutron irradiation

getting:

Co-60 RBE = 3,125 x 1.6 x 4

Outcome:

RBE of Co-60 = 20

which shows that option A is correct

Which biological process involves the conversion of one type of chemical energy into another type of chemical energy?

d, because it takes in glucose (chemical energy) and created atp(chemical energy). photosynthesis is similar but it uses light energy instead of chemical energy.

Where in the body would you find low oxygen levels causing vasoconstriction and high levels causing vasodilation?
stealth61 [152]
The correct answer is the lungs. Usually, in the systemic organs such as the liver, kidneys, and the heart; hypoxia or low oxygen levels cause the blood vessels supplying them to vasodilate to increase flow of blood and prevent ischemia. Adequate oxygenation of systemic organs cause the blood supply to vasoconstrict to prevent pooling of oxygenated blood and shunt it to other organs that need the oxygen more.

However, in the lungs, the opposite is true because in the setting of hypoxia, the blood vessels of the lungs vasoconstrict as to shunt the blood to other parts of the lungs with adequate oxygenation for the blood to be adequately oxygenated. If there is adequate oxygen in the lungs, then blood vessels vasodilate to efficiently get the oxygen from the lungs.

Which of the following is a characteristic of vitamin D nutrition?a.Pigments in dark skins increase vitamin D synthesis. b.On
Anvisha [2.4K]

Answer:

b. Only about one-half of the world's population relies on sunlight to maintain adequate vitamin D nutrition

Explanation:

Dark skin pigments slow down the synthesis of vitamin D, so black people need to spend more time in the sun to absorb enough vitamin D, so the letter A is incorrect.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight degrades the precursor of vitamin D, whereas prolonged exposure to sunlight produces vitamin D3, which acts to regulate heart function and blood pressure.  With this we can conclude that the letter C is also incorrect.

Vitamin D deficiency is not caused by calcium deficiency, on the contrary, vitamin D deficiency is a cause of calcium deficiency. In addition, summer vitamin D synthesis stocks are usually not sufficient to meet summer vitamin D requirements. That is why the letter D is also incorrect.

We can conclude, then, that the correct answer is the letter B. The main source of vitamin production is through sun exposure, because type B ultraviolet rays (UVB) are able to activate the synthesis of this substance. Some foods, especially fatty fish, are sources of vitamin D, but the sun is responsible for 80 to 90% of the vitamin the body receives. It can also be produced in the laboratory and given as a supplement when there is a deficiency and for the prevention and treatment of a variety of diseases.
